Where Does Cam Newton Rank Among NFL Quarterbacks?
It's common knowledge that the quarterback is the most important player on the field in a football game. They're the leader of the offense. The ball is in their hands every play. More often than not, good quarterback play will lead to wins. This however, has not been the case for the Carolina Panthers. They're sitting pretty with a solid 5-3 record and with the well known Cam Newton under center, you would think he's probably doing a pretty decent job, right? Wrong. Newton appears to honestly be trending downwards towards the demise of his career. His inconsistency throughout his career makes him a difficult player to rank. In my opinion, he is a below average quarterback and will not last more than 3 more years in the game. I would probably rank him somewhere between 16 and 20 in the league right now due to his horrible play on the field and arrogance off the field at a position that requires leadership.
A lot of people are still on the Newton hype train from his 2015 MVP season. I however, see him for what he actually is. He's an athletic quarterback with a below average arm, poor decision making, no leadership qualities and an unsustainable play style. Right now, Newton ranks 15th in the NFL with a career high 63% completion percentage, 18th in yards per game with 230 and 15th in touchdowns with 10 despite ranking 7th in attempts per game. He also leads the league in interceptions with 11 and has a pitiful 79.1 QBR which sits at 28th.
Newton is simply not a good enough passer to remain in the NFL. Eventually, he is going to have to turn into a pass first quarterback because typically, running quarterbacks only last so long. He will be 30 in just two seasons which means his time as a running quarterback is ticking to an end. He may be able to keep this play style up for a few seasons after the 30 year mark, but as soon as he completely gives it up his NFL days will be over due to his below average arm. Currently in his 7th season, Superman has had 6 mediocre seasons with an MVP award sandwiched in there. He will never be able to develop into a good passer, surely limiting how much time he has left.
Not only is Newton's performance on the field raising concerns, so are his antics off the field. He was in the news recently for his remarks to a female reporter that some considered to be sexist and more recently he has started walking out of press conferences. Cam is immature, can't handle tough moments and comes across as completely arrogant. These are all traits that can, and will be the downfall of a quarterback's career. They're supposed to be able to take blame, handle adversity and step up in big spots. Cam, simply can't do any of those things. Is the end of Newton's career closer than we think? I'd say so.
